Delphian School to Host Regional Chess Tournament

Released on = February 6, 2006, 4:51 pm

Press Release Author = The Delphian School

Industry = Education

Press Release Summary = The Delphian School is hosting the annual “Chess For
Success” Regional Chess Championship on Saturday, February 4th. Over 80 students
from kindergarten through high school will compete for trophies.

Press Release Body = Top Oregon chess-playing students from Newberg to Independence
will be flocking to the annual “Chess For Success” Regional Chess Championships this
Saturday, February 4th. This year the event will be held at The Delphian School, a
K-12 private day and boarding school in Sheridan, Oregon.

For students from kindergarten through high school, the tournament typically sees
over 80 students from the Yamhill and Polk Counties matching wits over chess boards
for trophies and top regional honors. Players are divided up to play in different
sections by their school grade levels, and each will get to play five games before
the day is over. Top finishers in grades K-4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9-12 will qualify to
play in the “Chess For Success” State Championships against champions from the other
regions in Oregon on March 3rd and 4th.

Tournament play will take place between 9:30am and 4:00pm in the main building on
The Delphian School campus in the hills overlooking the Willamette Valley. Grades
K-8 will compete in the school’s large middle school classroom, and the high school
students will compete in the school’s library.

While the location is new this year, the tournament’s directors will be long-time
veterans Rod Bixler of McMinnville and Bruce Cheney of Newberg. Both men are chess
coaches and strong supporters of chess in their local school districts.

For those interested, it is not too late for students to sign up. To learn how to
sign up or for more information about the “Chess for Success” organization, see its
web site at www.ChessForSuccess.org. Tours of The Delphian School will be available
to any parents or players who wish to see more of the campus.

The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school
offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for
elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use
Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services (http://www.AppliedScholastics.Org).
