Quality of Water flowing through Tolly`s Nullah within Kolkata Municipal area

Released on = February 27, 2006, 1:58 am

Press Release Author = Ms. Papita Saha

Industry = Environment

Press Release Summary = The water quality is tested by drawing samples from six
strategic locations under different climatic conditions as well as under flow and
ebb tide conditions. Standard testing methods have been adopted for the measurement
of water quality parameters.
It is observed that when water enters the canal from River Hooghly during full tide,
the quality of the water is not very bad. But during ebb- tide, and particularly
during post – monsoon session, the water quality deteriorates to a great extent.
Proper identification of the polluting body and adoption of pollution abatement
measures and dredging of the canal will possibly play a great role in improving the
water quality to bring it to reasonably pollution free level all throughout the
year.

Press Release Body = From the commencement of civilisation, flowing water streams
like rivers and canals have brought in untold amount of contaminants into the vast
lakes, seas and oceans. Continued contact with bacteria and enzymes decompose many
harmful organic constituents into harmless ones but quite many non- biodegradable
constituents flow down to accumulate in the vast sinks like seas and oceans, for
thousands of years.

Tolly\'s Nullah is a canal, which connects the river Hooghly in the west with the
east Kolkata wetland,India. Excessive silt deposition through years has rendered
the canal unfit for navigation and quality of water flowing through the canal has
reduced drastically. As the canal flows through the thickly populated areas in the
Southern part of Kolkata, the present work has been taken up to assess the water
quality at various locations within the Kolkata Municipal area along a 9 km stretch
of the canal from Hastings to Kudghat under full and ebb-tide conditions as well as
pre and post - monsoon seasons.

From the study of water quality of various points of Tolly’s Nullah, it is
seen that water of Nullah is somewhat polluted with the contaminants
coming from various industries and domestic sources located adjacent to
Tolly’s Nullah. Excessive silt deposition also play a vital role which can
obstacle the flow of water. So, adoption of pollution abatement measured
and dredging the silt from Nullah’s may be the solution for preventing the
pollution.
