A venue in Dorset is preparing to stage Muttnik - The First Dog in Space, a family-friendly event that will combine dance, music and puppetry to create a new version of a famous moment in history.

Based on the story of Soviet space dog Laika, the performance is due to take place at Dorchester Arts Centre between 11:00 and 14:00 GMT on Saturday February 18th.

Laika became the first animal to be launched into orbit when she was placed on board the Russia's Sputnik 2 spacecraft in November 1957.

In Muttnik, the audience is offered a glimpse of the dog's life as a stray on the streets of Moscow before she is taken to live at the Russian Space Centre.

After learning she has been selected to become the first dog in space, Muttnik's thoughts turn to skating on the rings of Saturn and digging holes in the moon.

With plenty of audience participation and the promise of a happy ending, the show looks set to offer an enjoyable outing for all the family.

Tickets for the performance are priced at £7 for adults and £5 for children. It is suitable for youngsters aged three and above.
