Twelfth Night is marked annually in the Bankside area of the capital on the Sunday closest to the day it falls on. This year's festivities are taking place on January 8 th . The event begins with an effigy of the pagan Green Man in his winter guise, the foliage-covered Holly Man, emerging from a Thames riverboat. He toasts – or ‘wassails' – the gathering crowds, promising to ‘bring in the green' for the coming spring.
This is followed by the Bankside Mummers performing the traditional Folk Combat Play of St. George, featuring a cast of characters including Beelzebub, the Turkey Sniper, Clever Legs and the Old ‘Oss. The play culminates with cakes being handed out, two of which have a bean or a pea hidden inside, the lucky recipients of which are declared King Bean and Queen Pea.
